• The beautiful island in the Bavarian ocean

One of the nicest attraction in Munchen is the tour of the Lake Chiemsee. You will visit the biggest lake of Germany also known as the Bavarian ocean.

On Lake Chiemisee there are three islands and a boat takes you on tour to and from every island from 15 to 15 minutes.

    How to get there

You should take the train from the Central Train station in Munchen. Stop in Prien en Chiemsee.

Be careful to buy the ticket from the machine not from the train offices because it is cheper with 2 euros and you don't have to wait in line. I think that the difference of 2 euros is actually because they want to encourage the use of electronic devices.

There are two kinds of tickets for reaching Prien en Chiemsee. The Bavarian ticket costs 28 euros per person from the electronic machine and you can use from 9 o'clock till 03.00 on the next day. It is also valid for the subway or bus and you can stop in every town on the way if you want. The usuall ticket for the Regio train costs 25 euros and you can use it also till 03.00 the next day. It is not valid for other means of transport. You will be there in almost an hour.

Prien en Chiemsee It is a small town with great painted buildings in bavarian style at the edge of the Bavarian Alps.

It is actually a blend between the bavarian tradition and the newest shops. You can easily find a Nike store close to a painted old building. Bear in mind that the lovely small town is a tourist atraction between 9 and 18 o'clock. The program is strict and after 18 it looks deserted :D. Those people knew how to respect their schedule.

Close to the little train station there is an info point, where you will receive a map and a schedule for getting to the dock where you take the boat to every island. You can take the "ciu ciu" train that works on coal otherwise it is a 20 minutes walk. The train costs 2,5 euros per person.

The boat ticket is 8 euros per person and the ride takes 10 or 15 minutes, depending on the island you want to visit.

On the first island - Herreninsel you can findHerrenchiemsee, the castle built by Bavarian King Ludwig II as a tribute to Versailles. The island itself is around 2km² and till the castle there is a 15 minutes walk through a beautiful contry side place.

Herrenchiemsee was designed as a symbol of the affection Ludwig had for Louis XIV of France (known as the "Sun King"). The castle has numerous details and decorations the remember the simbolist of the Sun King. It is a fairytale refuge for the king that wanted to be alone that had here only a few servents.

There is also a large garden and the fountais here play every 30 minutes.

There is a restaurant where you can eat a good meal for 25 euros per two persons. It includes fish, potatos, salad, snitze..

The second is the smallest and the most beautiful island is Frauinsle.

The people here are friendly and wish you a beautiful day. All the houses on the island have beautiful flowers at their front yard.

    It measures only 600m x 300m.

Here there is a small monastery and a city of almost 300 souls. The majority can accomodate tourists and they have small family breweries and a terrace to drink a beer. We stayed at this beautiful terrace
